About this tour

This season we take you to the "best safari destination in the world", a title awarded by the World Travel Awards in 2015 and never seriously disputed since. Where else but Kenya!

We start in Mombasa, nicknamed the "Island of War" for the many powers that have ruled it. With its location, international airport and large port linking Africa to the Middle East, India and China, it is the tourism hub of the region. We visit the Mombasa Tusks, then head for the flawless white sand and turquoise water of Watamu Beach. We meet one of the world's rare phenomena, a desert right next to the ocean, where you can ride quad bikes across the dunes. We also go on safari in Nairobi National Park, watching the animals roam free just a few metres from us. You will stand in front of the real Pride Rock, the cliff that inspired "The Lion King", and then ride on horseback past giraffes, zebras and gazelles in the magical landscape of Naivasha. When the day ends we discover Limuru, the land of Kenya's famous tea.

Finally we leave time for Nairobi, the Green City in the Sun. The days of this trip are filled with sunbathing, swimming in the Indian Ocean, jet skis, camel rides on the beach, quad bikes, fresh seafood, Kilimanjaro coffee and tea, a safari straight out of "The Lion King" and feeding the tallest animals on Earth. One more unforgettable chapter in your African story.

Day03

Optional excursion – Ocean & Desert Adventure

Mombasa Old Town, Watamu Beach and the Mambrui sand dunes

After breakfast we visit the Mombasa Tusks, take photos and learn what the famous Pembe Mbili (elephant tusks) symbolise, then head to the silky white sand, warm turquoise water and palm-lined lanes of the famous Watamu Beach.

Watamu has a unique shoreline: sandbanks rise from the sea and offer walks to the islets at low tide, and the beaches are sprinkled with starfish and small crabs.

In the late afternoon we visit the Mambrui sand dunes, one of the few places in the world where you can ride quad bikes across desert dunes right next to the ocean. Besides ATVs you can also try horse riding on the beach, ziplining or sky biking!

Day07

Optional excursion – Lion King Experience

Hell's Gate National Park, Lake Naivasha (horseback safari), Limuru (the tea town)

On the way to Hell's Gate, a photo stop above the Great Rift Valley, a 4,000–6,000 km geological system often called the "cradle of humankind". Hell's Gate National Park is known for its gorges, geothermal vents and volcanic rock towers that inspired "The Lion King"; here we see the famous Pride Rock.

At Naivasha you experience the wild from the saddle: with experienced guides you ride across the grasslands while giraffes, zebras and gazelles carry on around you. Routes are adapted to the riders' experience.

Tea means Limuru, the foundation of Kenya's tea industry. Limuru without a tasting? Not an option.

Day08

Optional excursion – African Safari Story

Safari in Nairobi National Park (included in the price); the elephant orphanage, the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen estate

The only national park in the world right next to a capital city, just 10 km from the centre. We set off for the wild, sunlit plains of Nairobi National Park. Lions, white and black rhinos, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, hippos, Somali ostrich, eland and grey crowned cranes are just some of the animals roaming a few metres from us. Lions literally walk up to the safari jeeps, and a selfie with rhinos, zebras and giraffes is guaranteed. For many this will be the highlight of the trip.

We continue to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, one of the world's best-known rescue and rehabilitation centres for orphaned baby elephants: we watch the calves feed and play and hear their story of returning to the wild.

Then the Giraffe Centre, where you meet the endangered Rothschild giraffe up close: we feed them, stroke them and take photos.

Finally the Karen Blixen estate. The Danish writer came to Kenya in 1914 and ran a coffee farm in the Karen area until 1931; her life there inspired Out of Africa. Lunch and freshly brewed beer are available on the estate.

  • * Passengers not joining the excursion stay at the hotel in Nairobi and spend the day at leisure.
